Meet the Owner:

Outer Banks Realtor John Thompson

John Thompson, Windswept PropertiesSitting on Outer Banks Realtor John Thompson’s desk is a small plaque given to him by his wife of 40 years, which says, “I’m not from North Carolina, but I got here as fast as I could!

That’s the feeling John has had since his first trip to the Outer Banks as a kid with his family, back when they would all camp in tents on Ocracoke Island. Shortly after marriage, John introduced his new wife to this wonderful area on North Carolina’s coast. She, too, fell in love with it’s natural beauty and wonderful people.

It always seems to take something to “move us” with big decisions, and in John’s case, it was a friend that asked he and his wife to visit them for a week at their second home on Hatteras Island. That was all it took, and in 1980 John purchased his first piece of real estate, built a cottage and began leasing it to seasonal vacationers.

Not a North Carolina resident at the time, John knew the building business, being a successful sales rep, manager and later marketing director with Owens Corning Fiberglas. This knowledge, and his strong negotiation skills enabled him to continue his involvement in the area, increasing his real estate investments and understanding of not only the correct construction techniques & property management issues, but also the people, their culture and the evolving trends for this jewel on North Carolina’s coast.

Practicing real estate sales outside of North Carolina convinced John that he loved the business, and as soon as his girls were in college, he and his wife would head to the beach…and begin helping others do what he had done 20 years ago.

His clients have been from varying areas, and his properties have also been throughout the Outer Banks. From the 4-wheel drive area in Corolla, to Hatteras Island, John has sold lots, Oceanfront homes, and also smaller properties for first time buyers or even those who are relocating to the area. He not only prides himself in learning about each of his clients’ needs, but ensuring that those needs are in fact realized.

As owner of Windswept, John’s offices moved to Manteo’s Waterfront in November of 2001. In an effort to better serve the company’s growing list of clients, in October of 2003, John opened up his new location in Kill Devil Hills.

In 2012 he was approached by a national firm who “just had to have this valuable business corner” and although it was a bit inconvenient during perhaps the busiest time of the real estate selling season, John agreed to sell!

John moved his offices north to Kitty Hawk in the Spring of 2012 where he continues to provide the same level of exemplary service that clients have learned to expect since 2001.

While it is always nice to have a client come to see him in an office, John really believes the best office is with his client in his car finding that special property, or showing one of his selling clients’ properties to a prospective buyer.

John is an active member of the National Association of Realtors, the Outer Banks Association of Realtors and The Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce. John also serves as the Broker In Charge of his firm’s office.

Since opening his doors as a Realtor on the Outer Banks, John and his firm’s revenues have soared into the millions!!! In 2005 alone, John’s personal transactions approached $30 Million. When the recession really took its toll on the industry beginning in 2007, the ranks were substantially thinned among those able to continue in the real estate sector. Many left the industry.

In virtually every year of the recessionary environment, John has continued to be at the top of the market.

In 2012 John is continuing his superb status and will again finish in the top 1% of all selling brokers on the Outer Banks! Now that’s moving!!!

Married for 40 years and the proud father of two daughters, John is proud to call the Outer Banks home.

So even if you are not from North Carolina, John encourages you to get here as fast as you can! He will be happy to help you find that special property to fulfill your dreams!
